If you are a fan of microwave popcorn, then I’m sure you have heard about the toxic artificial butter flavorings that were a common ingredient in most comercial microwave popcorns. Is there more to be concerned about? Yes. It’s important to purchase organic popcorn and avoid the slew of GMO corn out there. I also try to use the stovetop vs. the microwave whenever possible. Recently, I’ve missed popcorn and have started making my own stove top popcorn with a yummy twist.
I like to pick up my popcorn kernels from a bulk bin, but if an organic popcorn isn’t available, I buy a package. Make sure to store your popcorn kernels in an airtight container to help them maintain their moisture and popping ability. I like to keep ours in a glass mason jar.
Make your own non toxic stovetop popcorn!
Ingredients:
1/4 cup organic popcorn kernels
1 tbsp grapeseed oil (great for high heat cooking – doesn’t burn easily)
spray on coconut or olive oil (optional)
1-2 tbsp nutritional yeast
dash of garlic salt or your favorite spicy seasoning
Add 1 tbsp of grapeseed oil to a medium sized saucepan. Drop a couple of popcorn kernels in the pan and cover with the lid. Heat on med/high heat.
Once the popcorn kernels pop, quickly add 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels, recover with the lid, lift the pot off the flame and shake briefly to coat all kernels with the oil. Replace pot on heat and let ‘em pop!
When kernels stop popping for 15 seconds remove pot from heat and turn off heat source.
I would try sprinkling the nutritional yeast and garlic salt without any additional oil first. If you aren’t getting the flavor you want then try a brief spray with oil, add your toppings and shake/stir.
This is one of our favorite after dinner snacks!
